Location and what to see

Getting there

Si Grand Ninh Binh Hotel stands at 272 Đường 30/6 in Ninh Binh city, roughly 100 kilometres south of Hanoi and one of the easiest bases from which to reach the region's scenery. The simplest arrival is by train: eight daily services link Hanoi with Ninh Binh Railway Station in a little over two hours, and the station sits just about 1.7 kilometres from the hotel, a five-minute taxi or Grab ride. Tourist limousines and minibuses also run door-to-door from Hanoi's Old Quarter in around two to three hours. The nearest airport, Tho Xuan, is about 78 kilometres away, roughly a 1.5-hour drive, while Hanoi's Noi Bai is a longer transfer. Once here, the flat lanes are ideal for cycling, and taxis, Grab and rented motorbikes make day trips simple; the hotel can also help arrange an airport shuttle or a private car.

What to see

The hotel makes a convenient springboard for Ninh Binh's headline sights, most of them a short drive west. Trang An, a UNESCO-listed maze of rivers, caves and temples explored by sampan, is about 7 kilometres away, while the classic Tam Coc boat trip along the Ngo Dong River lies roughly 8 kilometres out. For the region's most photographed panorama, climb the roughly 500 steps at Hang Mua, around 10 kilometres away. History sits close too: Hoa Lu, Vietnam's tenth-century capital, is about 12 kilometres on, and the vast Bai Dinh Pagoda complex some 22 kilometres away. The valley is at its most magical during the rice harvest in late May and early June, when the paddies turn gold; spring brings lush green, and the cooler winter months are pleasant for temple-hopping. Set out early or after mid-afternoon to avoid the midday heat and the biggest crowds at the piers.
